CNS Update: Local School Wellness Policy

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) released the final rule for the Local School Wellness Policy (LWP) on August 29, 2016. This update provides details about the final rule and expectations for compliance by all local education agencies (LEA) participating in the National School Lunch Program (NSLP).

Implementation of the LWP is expected to strengthen the ability of the LEA to create a school nutrition environment that promotes students’ health, well-being and the ability to learn. Details regarding changes to LWP requirements as a result of the final rule can be found in the Local School Wellness Policy Reference Sheet

An assessment of the LWP to determine compliance and progress in attaining the goals of the wellness policy is required at least every three years. A copy of the assessment is required for Administrative Reviews. The LWP must be fully implemented by June 30, 2017.
