Parent Guide: Talking to Your Child About Loss

Dear Families,
Today, we shared with students the sad news that Callaway, a 4th grade student and the son of a high school teacher, has died following a recent illness. We understand this may bring up questions or emotions at home.

Here are some ways to support your child:

How to Talk With Your Child
• Use simple, honest language: “He died”
• Share only what you know—avoid guessing
• Follow your child’s lead—answer questions briefly
• It’s okay if your child doesn’t want to talk

Reassure Your Child
• Let them know they are safe
• Emphasize that many adults are here to care for them
• Maintain normal routines as much as possible

Common Reactions

Children may:
• Feel sad, confused, or worried
• Ask repeated questions
• Show changes in behavior (clinginess, irritability, quietness)
• Seem unaffected (this can also be normal)

When to Seek Extra Support

Consider reaching out if your child:
• Has ongoing difficulty sleeping or eating
• Shows intense anxiety or fear
• Talks about death frequently
• Has experienced a recent loss

Simple Ways to Help
• Spend extra time together
• Encourage expression through talking, drawing, or writing
• Limit exposure to upsetting media
• Keep routines consistent

If your child needs additional support, school counselors are available to help.

Dear Wildcat Families,
It is with great sadness that we share the unexpected passing of Callaway, a 4th grade student and the son of our high school teacher, Mr. Piturachsatit. Callaway passed away today following a recent illness.
This is a heartbreaking loss for his family and for our school community. We understand that this news may be difficult for children to hear, and we encourage families to talk with their children in ways that feel supportive and appropriate. Our school counselors will be available to provide extra care and support for any students who may need it.
We hold Callaway’s family in our thoughts and appreciate the kindness and compassion of our school community during this time.
